The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially debunked recent reports suggesting it has joined forces with a new political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, clarified that the PDP has not endorsed or made any formal decision to be part of the emerging coalition.
“For clarity, the National Working Committee (NWC) wants to categorically state that no official position has been taken regarding any coalition,” Ologunagba said, addressing the misinformation circulating on social media.
He emphasized that the PDP is currently directing its energy towards preparations for its upcoming National Convention. The party is also working to strengthen internal unity, rebuild its structure, and restore stability after a turbulent period following the 2023 elections.
“Our primary focus is to consolidate the progress made in uniting the party, reinforcing our structures, and building the capacity needed to reclaim power in 2027,” Ologunagba added.
Since its loss in the last presidential election, the PDP has faced internal wrangling, including disputes over key positions like the office of the National Secretary. However, those tensions were recently addressed during the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which confirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.
Despite this, the party has seen defections, with some members throwing their weight behind the newly formed coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Notable political heavyweights such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark (now interim ADC chairman), and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido have shown interest in the coalition.
These figures—some still PDP members—attended a strategic coalition meeting held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. A communiqué issued at the event, signed by David Mark, urged PDP supporters and Nigerians at large to rally behind the alliance in its effort to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
Reacting to these developments, PDP acting National Chairman Umar Damagum reaffirmed the party’s unity and warned that disciplinary measures could be taken against any individuals undermining its stability.
Ologunagba, however, left the door open for future alliances, stating that while the PDP is not officially part of any coalition at this stage, it remains committed to engaging with patriotic Nigerians and political stakeholders who align with its vision for national renewal.
“As a major opposition force with deep national roots, we remain open to constructive collaboration with like-minded citizens committed to rescuing Nigeria from the misrule of the APC,” he said.
The PDP reiterated its commitment to rebuilding and regaining public trust as it prepares for a strong showing in the 2027 elections.
