PDP Rejects Alleged Terrorism Tag by Canadian Court, Says Link With Tinubu & APC Unjustified

PDP Rejects Alleged Terrorism Tag by Canadian Court, Says Link With Tinubu & APC Unjustified

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly refuted claims that a Canadian court has branded Nigeria’s major political parties—the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—as terrorist organizations.

According to senior government sources who spoke with Daily Trust, the Federal Government is expected to formally respond to the development today, describing the matter as “highly embarrassing.”

Timothy Osadolor, a member of the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC), told Daily Trust that while courts in other countries have the freedom to issue opinions, such statements do not equate to verified truth.

“The court’s right to express its view doesn’t automatically make it a reflection of reality,” Osadolor stated.

He criticized the court’s decision to broadly implicate entire political parties, particularly the PDP, instead of singling out individuals who may have connections to terrorist activities—primarily within the APC, he claimed.

“There are credible figures within the APC, and the PDP itself is a respected political platform. It’s unfair and misplaced to group us with a party that many believe has damaged Nigeria’s global reputation. The Canadian court overstepped by aligning us with any terrorism-related accusations,” Osadolor added.

He interpreted the court’s position as an indirect indictment of the Tinubu administration’s failure to effectively combat terrorism, noting that although the president may not be directly involved, his lackluster security efforts have made him appear vulnerable to terrorist groups operating across Nigeria.

“Rather than focusing on national security, the administration has largely prioritized protecting itself. This ruling should serve as a serious warning to President Tinubu,” Osadolor warned.

As of the time of reporting, efforts to get official reactions from the APC and the Federal Government had not yielded results. APC representatives Felix Morka and Bala Ibrahim did not respond to inquiries, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, had yet to reply to messages sent to him.

However, a top government source indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue a statement once the ruling is authenticated.

“Once we verify the court ruling, a formal government response will follow. Each party mentioned will also have the chance to address the allegations,” the source said, requesting anonymity.
