ONLINE SCAM: POLICE DETAIN SUSPECTS IN SEXTORTION SCHEME

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) has apprehended three individuals linked to a sextortion and romance scam. The suspects, identified as Abodunrin Rasheed, Abodunrin Tunde, and Abodunrin Rokeeb, were arrested following reports submitted through the NPF-NCCC E-Reporting portal and intelligence gathered by the Center.

The investigation revealed that the suspects targeted a Croatian national on a dating app, posing as a woman. Their communication progressed to Instagram and WhatsApp, leading to an intimate relationship. The victim was manipulated into sending nude photographs, which the suspects later used to extort him, demanding payment or threatening to share the images with his family and friends.

Following a thorough investigation, the NPF-NCCC operatives apprehended the suspects and recovered several items, including six iPhones, one Techno phone, one Samsung phone, and a Lexus car.
Further inquiries disclosed that the suspects have a history of engaging in similar cybercriminal activities, both as a group and individually, defrauding numerous victims worldwide. Their illicit gains were primarily received in the form of gift cards, such as iTunes and Steam cards. The suspects will face legal charges once the investigation concludes.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, urges Nigerians to remain vigilant against suspicious online activities and warns those involved in cybercrime that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to combating all forms of crime. The IGP reaffirmed the dedication of the police to ensuring cybersecurity and maintaining national peace and security.
Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities via the NPF-NCCC e-reporting portal at [http://nccc.npf.gov.ng/ereport/signin](http://nccc.npf.gov.ng/ereport/signin) to facilitate the prompt identification and arrest of cybercriminals.
