Police confirm arrest of ex-presidential aide Obono-Obla, dismiss kidnap claims
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of former presidential aide, Okoi Obono-Obla, dismissing widespread claims that he was kidnapped.
In a statement issued on Thursday, police authorities clarified that Obono-Obla was lawfully apprehended by operatives over allegations currently under investigation. The clarification followed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the former Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property had been abducted by unknown gunmen.
According to police sources, Obono-Obla was taken into custody in connection with matters that have been the subject of prior legal scrutiny. The police described the arrest as procedural and in line with existing laws, emphasizing that due process was followed.
“There was no abduction. The individual in question was arrested by duly identified law enforcement officers carrying out their responsibilities,” a senior police official stated, urging the public to disregard what he described as “misleading narratives.”
Obono-Obla, who served during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has remained a controversial public figure since leaving office. His tenure at the helm of the anti-corruption panel was marked by high-profile investigations and legal battles, some of which drew both commendation and criticism from political observers.
Family members and associates had earlier raised alarm after reports surfaced that he was taken away by unidentified men. However, police authorities insisted that officers involved in the operation properly identified themselves and acted within their mandate.
Security analysts say the swift clarification by the police reflects growing concerns over misinformation, especially in cases involving prominent political figures. In recent years, social media has played a significant role in shaping public perception before official statements are issued.
Legal practitioners have noted that while arrests of high-profile individuals often trigger speculation, it remains essential to allow investigative processes to run their course. They stress that suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
As of press time, the specific charges or allegations linked to Obono-Obla’s arrest had not been officially disclosed. Police authorities assured that further details would be communicated as investigations progress.
The development has reignited public discourse about accountability, transparency, and the intersection of politics and law enforcement in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
