Police Question Mohbad’s Father Over Lagos Monarch’s Petition; caused by Mohbad’s death
On Monday, Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad, was questioned by officers at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos. This followed a petition from Oba Saheed Elegushi.
Monisola Odumosu, head of the Aloba legal team, explained in a statement on Tuesday that the petition involves allegations of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and criminal defamation. These accusations stem from comments made by Aloba during a recent interview.
The statement noted, “Mr. Aloba was invited to the police station and accompanied by his legal representatives, Teri Wellington and Monisola Odumosu. The petition by Oba Saheed Elegushi claims that Mr. Aloba defamed him during an interview with a London-based blogger, suggesting that his son was bullied and killed on Oba Elegushi’s orders, carried out by one Sam Larry.”
Aloba maintained that his intention was not to defame or engage in cyberbullying or cyberstalking against Oba Elegushi, but rather to seek justice for his late son. He also clarified that he had no concrete evidence to support the allegations beyond his late son’s petition and phone conversations.
Odumosu added that Oba Elegushi, present at the meeting, requested a retraction of the defamatory statements. Odumosu emphasized that Aloba was neither arrested nor detained and was granted bail without issue.
“In fairness to Oba Elegushi, he only asked for the retraction of Mr. Aloba’s statements on social media. Mr. Aloba was never arrested or detained. It is important to note that he is still mourning the loss of his son, a significant emotional burden that might lead to impulsive statements.”
Mohbad, who passed away at 27 on September 12, 2023, left behind a series of controversies on social media. Formerly signed to Marlian Music, Mohbad parted ways with the label in February 2022. In response to his death, the Lagos State Police Command set up a 13-member special investigation team on September 18, 2023.
The singer’s death led to the arrests of Naira Marley and socialite Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, among others. His body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
FIRST CLASS GISTS exclusively reported that a US-based lab denied the Lagos State Government’s claim that the toxicology test was conducted at its facility. This revelation came from an inquiry by a correspondent investigating the musician’s death.
Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, stated in a live call with Ahmad Isah of Brekete Family in February 2024 that the toxicology test was being done at NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, USA. However, a pathologist testified on May 15 that the autopsy could not determine Mohbad’s cause of death due to body decomposition.
Responding to FIRST CLASS GISTS inquiry on May 17, NMS Labs’ Forensics Division Client Services Associate, Esther Dede, confirmed, “Unfortunately, we do not have a case for that patient.”
