The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully rescued a 63-year-old former Shell Petroleum Development Company worker (name withheld) who was kidnapped in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. According to a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, on Monday, the rescue operation also resulted in the death of one suspected kidnapper, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.
John disclosed that the rescue operation was initiated on June 22, 2024, following actionable intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the kidnapped victim. The Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, instructed the command’s SWAT operatives to intervene immediately.
Upon encountering the kidnappers, a shootout ensued, during which one of the suspects sustained severe gunshot wounds and subsequently died in hospital care. The other perpetrators managed to escape. The rescued victim was found unharmed at a residence in Ikot Udobong Village, Etim Ekpo LGA.
Investigations revealed that the kidnappers initially demanded N50 million ransom, later reducing it to N20 million before the rescue operation. No ransom was paid prior to the successful rescue. The police are currently intensifying efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The statement affirmed the commitment of the Commissioner of Police to ensuring the safety and security of Akwa Ibom State residents, pledging continued efforts to combat crime and apprehend criminal elements. The public was urged to assist by reporting any suspicious activities to the police through emergency hotlines or by visiting the nearest police station.
