Aggrieved residents of Uwheru and Unenurhie communities in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday reportedly barricaded the ever-busy East-West Road in protest against the alleged killing of a fisherman by suspected herdsmen.

FIRST CLASS GISTS gathered that a few other fishermen sustained one minor injury or the other and now receiving treatment at medical facilities following a bloody clash by the invading herdsmen.

The incident reportedly occurred around 12 noon on Monday, February 5, 2024, during which one Mr. Ofe Ekevwerho from Uwheru community was said to have died due to multiple gunshot wounds sustained.

One Roland was also reported to have suffered some serious gunshot injuries during the clash and is among the wounded receiving treatment at hospitals in Ughelli town.

Angered by the incident, residents of Uwheru and Unenurhie communities were said to have barricaded the East-West Road to register their grievances.

The protesting villagers demanded justice for the deceased and the wounded, as they called on the state and federal governments to intervene in the incessant clashes between the herdsmen and the local residents.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, when contacted confirmed the incident.

He could not however give details as operatives were allegedly denied access to Uwheru community.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Patricia Igwebuike, proved abortive as she did not respond to calls and text messages to her telephone line.

However, a source in the ministry, who craved anonymity, simply said, “Yes, we heard of the protest and the blockade of the expressway today over levies and tolls on that corridor. The thing is that there are certain levies all the parties agreed to be paying to designated officials, but the tipper drivers are claiming they are being asked to pay above what was agreed upon, the matter will be investigated.”
