Reasons Behind Damagum’s Suspension as PDP Acting Chairman Revealed

Recently, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, along with National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, was suspended by a faction of the National Working Committee (NWC). This faction, which supports National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, cited allegations of disloyalty as the basis for their actions.

On the same day, a significant legal development occurred when Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that Damagum remains the legitimate National Chairman of the PDP. The court stated that he can only be removed through a national convention, affirming his status amid ongoing disputes within the party.

The controversy stems from a lawsuit filed by Senator Umar Maina against the PDP’s National Executive Committee and Board of Trustees. Amid these developments, a national officer disclosed that one of the central accusations against Damagum is the misuse of his authority.

Specifically, he is accused of exceeding his financial authority by pledging a donation of N35 million to flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State, despite the approved limit for such donations being N10 million. This act, carried out without the necessary approval from the NWC, has raised questions about his adherence to party protocols.
