Reno Omokri: Akpabio’s Legacy in One Local Government Dwarfs Obi’s 8 Years in Anambra

Political commentator Reno Omokri has taken aim at supporters of Peter Obi, questioning their criticism of Ibom Air while highlighting what he sees as Obi’s underwhelming performance during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State.
In a recent commentary, Omokri expressed surprise over the backlash against Akwa Ibom’s state-owned airline following a reported incident, which, according to him, may not even be the airline’s fault.
He noted a perceived double standard: “Obi’s followers are quick to drag Ibom Air, yet they stayed silent when Air Peace — which many believe has a less favorable customer service reputation — faced issues. Why the selective outrage?” he asked.
Omokri went on to draw comparisons between the achievements of Akwa Ibom under various leaders — notably Godswill Akpabio — and what he described as Peter Obi’s relatively modest legacy in Anambra.
“Compare Akwa Ibom’s investment in infrastructure, education, aviation, seaports, and sports development to Anambra during Obi’s eight years. It’s not even close,” Omokri claimed.
He pointed out that Ibom Air reportedly generated ₦96 billion in revenue in 2014 — a feat he said was part of Akwa Ibom’s broader strategy of self-driven development without relying heavily on the Federal Government or playing the victim.
“Back in 1999, Akwa Ibom was struggling. Today, it’s one of Nigeria’s most developed states — and it didn’t happen by waiting for Abuja. They built their own future,” he added.
Omokri ended his post with a message of support for the state: “May Akwa Ibom continue to rise above the noise and progress beyond its detractors.”
