Reno Omokri: Nigerians Criticize Tinubu’s Economy Yet Splurge on iPhone 17

Reno Omokri, Bola Tinubu
Reno Omokri has called out what he sees as a contradiction in the way many Nigerians react to the current economic challenges. While there’s widespread criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s policies and rising inflation, Omokri argues that many citizens are reluctant to meet their civic responsibilities—especially when it comes to taxes.
According to him, the economic downturn hasn’t wrecked the country, but rather exposed a culture of living beyond one’s means. He pointed out that some individuals claim to be struggling financially, yet have no issue spending lavishly on luxury items.
“People say Tinubu has ruined Nigeria’s economy and that the country is doomed. But interestingly, the iPhone 17 Pro Max—which goes for nearly $2,000—is completely sold out in Nigeria,” Omokri said.
He added, “The same people who bought the latest iPhone often complain when it comes to paying taxes. They demand everything from the government but contribute little in return.”
In his view, Tinubu hasn’t destroyed the nation, but instead has forced a reckoning with what he calls Nigeria’s “fake lifestyle” — a tendency to appear wealthy in spending habits while avoiding financial responsibility.
Apple’s iPhone 17, along with new smartwatches and AirPods, was officially launched on September 9 at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, just ahead of the holiday shopping rush, according to Tribune Online.
