Reps Approve Bill for Armed Squad in FRSC

The House of Representatives has passed a bill for a second reading aimed at establishing a special armed squad within the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance its operations.
Sponsored by Representatives Abiodun Derin Adesida and Olaide Lateef Muhammed, the bill proposes amendments to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act of 2007. It seeks to create the FRSC Special Armed Squad and ensure that Deputy Corp Marshals receive appropriate retirement benefits. The bill also aims to grant the corps exclusive authority over road traffic administration and safety management, focusing on preventing and reducing traffic accidents, supervising road users, and regulating traffic flow.
Additionally, the legislation would empower the FRSC to clear road obstructions and educate the public on safe road usage.
The proposal received unanimous support from members during a voice vote.
Furthermore, the House adopted a motion introduced by Rep. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, encouraging the FRSC to integrate more technology into its operations. This motion calls for the adoption of advanced enforcement technologies, including Automated Vehicle Location and Automated Traffic Enforcement systems, as well as enhanced data analytics.
The motion was approved and referred to the House Committee on the FRSC for further evaluation.
