Reps Move to End Discrimination: New Bill Seeks Equal Recognition for HND and BSc Holders

The Nigerian House of Representatives is making progress on a bill aimed at eliminating the longstanding distinction between holders of Higher National Diplomas (HND) and Bachelor’s Degrees (BSc), according to Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

Speaking at the 36th convocation ceremony of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos on Thursday, and represented by Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda, Abbas underscored the importance of strengthening vocational and technical education in the country. He called for increased investment in these sectors to fuel technological advancement and elevate the nation’s standing globally.

The Speaker further revealed that the proposed legislation would criminalize any form of discrimination between HND and BSc holders, ensuring both groups are given equal opportunities in the workforce.

“Education is key to national development. We recognize the significance of vocational and technical education, as it provides the skills needed to drive our technological progress. To this end, we are working on increasing funding for these sectors. Additionally, we are formulating a legal framework to eliminate the divide between HND and BSc qualifications. Equal opportunities must be provided for all,” Abbas stated.

He also encouraged the graduating students to embrace their potential and contribute positively to the country’s development, acknowledging the pivotal role they play in shaping the future.

At the ceremony, Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Remi Tinubu, who was honored as a Fellow of the College, reiterated her strong belief in the power of education to transform lives. She also shared her experience in founding the New Era Foundation in Lagos, aimed at advancing educational initiatives.

Represented by Hon. Wahab Alawiye King, Mrs. Tinubu announced a N50 million Endowment Fund for YABATECH to support top female graduates. She emphasized the need to break down barriers to female education and create better opportunities for the younger generation.

“We must support the education of the girl child and remove any obstacles that hinder her progress. When I was in the Senate, my focus was always on improving the lives of our young people, as they are the future of our nation,” she said.

In a speech delivered by Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmed, Minister of State for Education, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the administration’s efforts to enhance the education sector were highlighted. These include the introduction of a student loan scheme and an ongoing review of tertiary institutions’ needs. He urged graduates to represent their alma mater with integrity and excellence.

The Rector of YABATECH, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, in his welcome address, reflected on the institution’s 77-year history of contribution to Nigeria’s education landscape. He called for more support from individuals and corporate bodies to upgrade and replace the institution’s aging infrastructure.

Prof. Funso Afolabi, Chairman of the Governing Council, also praised the management of YABATECH for their efforts in advancing the institution’s mission and objectives.
