Rivers ADC Confirms Plot To Arrest Amaechi: Allegations Shake Political Space
In a bombshell development that has stirred Nigeria’s political landscape, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has publicly confirmed claims of a purported scheme to arrest Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation and a prominent presidential aspirant, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Sunday Ohakwu, a senior ADC chieftain, the alleged plan is being orchestrated by elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a top security official in the presidency. Ohakwu spoke at a press briefing in Abuja, asserting that the plot was designed to weaken Amaechi’s growing influence and derail his presidential campaign.

Claims of Political Targeting
Ohakwu said his party had uncovered intelligence suggesting that the APC was anxious about Amaechi’s rising popularity, especially given his role as a leading figure in the opposition. The ADC leader alleged that committees had been formed to comb through records in Rivers State, Lagos State and Abuja to find “airtight” grounds for prosecution by anti‑graft agencies — such as the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), or the Department of State Services (DSS) — that could justify an arrest.

He further claimed that meetings have allegedly been held in recent weeks between ruling party operatives and security agents to identify evidence that could be used in court to detain and prosecute Amaechi. Ohakwu insisted that the move was politically motivated, aimed at creating a distraction or intimidation strategy against the opposition.

Opposition’s Response and Denials
In response to these allegations, the ADC dismissed the purported plot as a “witch‑hunt” that would ultimately fail, urging Nigerians not to tolerate what it termed political intimidation. The party vowed that efforts to tarnish Amaechi’s reputation or impede his presidential hopes would be “dead on arrival.”

As of now, there has been no official response from the APC, the presidency, or any of the major security agencies mentioned regarding these claims. Likewise, Amaechi himself has not publicly commented on the specific allegations of an impending arrest.

Political Implications Ahead of 2027
This emerging controversy underscores the heightened tensions within Nigerian politics as various parties and figures gear up for the 2027 general elections. Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State who defected from the APC to the ADC and declared his presidential ambition, has been at the centre of political discourse given his experience and visibility.

The ADC’s public alarm over a possible arrest operation reflects broader anxieties about the potential use of state power to influence political outcomes, a recurring theme in Nigeria’s electoral history. Whether these claims will translate into legal action, political backlash, or independent investigations remains a developing story.
