Sanwo-Olu: Anti-Tinubu Alliance Destined to Fail
Urges Nigerians to Stay Confident in Tinubu’s Vision
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has dismissed the emerging opposition alliance targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, saying it lacks direction and will ultimately collapse.
Speaking to journalists and political stakeholders in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu described the coalition—rumored to be forming under the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—as a gathering of discontented figures with no unifying ideology beyond their opposition to the President.
According to the governor, the coalition’s primary aim is to distract the President from his reform agenda. “This is simply a desperate move to derail the progress Nigerians are beginning to witness. But the President is focused. He knows the terrain and won’t be swayed by noise,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The group reportedly includes prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and past governors Nasir el-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola. Despite their high profiles, Sanwo-Olu dismissed their efforts as politically motivated rather than ideologically driven.
“No Going Back to the Past”
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and urged Nigerians not to be misled by political maneuvering. “Nigerians will not return to the past. The gains of Tinubu’s reforms—economic stabilization, infrastructure projects, increased revenue for states, student loan schemes, and oil sector recovery—are real and ongoing,” he said.
He credited Tinubu with steady progress in critical areas such as foreign exchange, tax reforms, and the new national minimum wage, highlighting them as evidence of effective governance.
“ADC Is Not a Threat”
When asked whether the President or the APC were concerned about the ADC’s political movement, Sanwo-Olu replied, “There’s no reason to be distracted by what ADC or any other opposition group is plotting. The public sees the progress being made. Their alliance is fueled by bitterness, not vision, and it won’t last.”
Support for Tinubu Across Party Lines
Sanwo-Olu concluded by urging President Tinubu to stay the course. “Millions of Nigerians—regardless of political affiliation—understand the magnitude of the task at hand and believe in the President’s leadership. This is not the time to be sidetracked.”
He also called for continued calm and unity, emphasizing discipline and patience as the country navigates through its reform journey under Tinubu’s leadership.
