Saudi Deportation: Sheikh Gumi Calls on Nigerian Government to Defend Citizens’ Rights Abroad

Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on the Federal Government to take a firm stance in protecting the rights of Nigerians facing unfair treatment overseas, following his recent deportation by Saudi Arabian authorities.

In an interview with Vanguard, Sheikh Gumi addressed the incident and its broader significance for Nigeria’s foreign relations, stressing the importance of national dignity and the protection of individual freedoms.

Confirming the government’s involvement, he said, “Yes, the Nigerian authorities are actively addressing the issue. Nigeria must uphold its values as a sovereign state. As long as speech does not incite violence, hatred, or division, every Nigerian has the right to express their views—especially when the purpose of travel is for worship.”

Gumi noted that he has already been contacted by key government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and expressed confidence in the steps being taken. “I believe the government is taking the appropriate actions to ensure its citizens are treated with dignity and not harassed unnecessarily,” he said.

He also issued a broader message about Nigeria’s international standing: “Our nation must assert itself. We are not subservient to any country. Let this serve as a warning to authoritarian regimes: the rights of Nigerians are not up for compromise.”

Asked whether he would consider traveling again to Saudi Arabia for religious purposes, Sheikh Gumi responded without hesitation: “Of course, I will return for pilgrimage. It’s a sacred obligation, and access to places of worship should never be politicized or restricted.”

The incident occurred upon his arrival at the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina. Gumi, who was part of a delegation of clerics under the sponsorship of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), was promptly turned back and returned to Nigeria aboard Umza Air.

Despite the episode, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia continue to maintain longstanding diplomatic ties. However, the deportation has sparked renewed discussion about the treatment of Nigerians abroad and the need for stronger diplomatic advocacy by the Nigerian government.
