A tragic incident of domestic violence has deeply disturbed the community of eMalahleni, Witbank, Mpumalanga, where a 22-year-old woman, Nompumelelo Gumede, was reportedly set ablaze by her jealous boyfriend, according to reports from Eyes of Lagos.

The man, who is also the father of Nompumelelo’s two-year-old child, is said to have attacked her in a fit of jealousy. He allegedly poured petrol on both Nompumelelo and his own sister, then locked them in a room before igniting the fire.

Witnesses say the suspect’s sister tried to protect Nompumelelo from the violent outburst but tragically suffered severe burns herself. Both women sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving intensive medical care.

Suspect in Custody; Court Date Set

Authorities apprehended the suspect soon after the incident. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, July 28, 2025, facing charges including attempted murder and arson.

Outcry for Justice and Enhanced Protection for Women

This horrific attack has sparked widespread condemnation from gender-based violence (GBV) activists, who are urging for immediate justice and stronger protective measures for women facing domestic abuse.

“A woman’s home should be a place of safety, not danger,” said a local advocate, emphasizing the urgent need to address domestic violence in the region.

As Nompumelelo battles for her life, her loved ones and community members are demanding decisive action and tougher laws to prevent such acts of brutality in the future.
