See Reasons Igboho Urges President Tinubu to Caution Shettima Over Attacks on Kemi Badenoch
Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and caution Vice President Kashim Shettima over what he referred to as unwarranted verbal attacks on Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Conservative Party.
Igboho made the call in a statement issued on Sunday, December 15, following reports that Shettima had criticized Badenoch after she spoke out on corruption in Nigeria. The British politician, who recently affirmed her Yoruba heritage, also distanced herself from Northern Nigeria in her remarks.
In his statement, which he personally signed, Igboho emphasized that Shettima should focus on Nigeria’s pressing national issues rather than engaging in public disputes. He argued that President Tinubu, as a fellow Yoruba, has a responsibility to guide the vice president to focus on his official duties rather than fueling unnecessary conflict.
“It is high time President Bola Tinubu, who shares the Yoruba ethnic lineage, intervenes and directs Shettima to concentrate on his responsibilities as vice president rather than waste time on verbal attacks against Badenoch, who was only voicing her honest perspective on the widespread corruption plaguing Nigeria,” Igboho stated.
Igboho also recalled the era of former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting how critics of the Fulani ethnic group faced severe repercussions during his administration. He pointed out that under Buhari’s rule, those who dared criticize the Fulani were either silenced by state power or paid a heavy price.
“When President Buhari was in office, anyone who spoke against the Fulani ethnic group faced immediate action from the government, including being silenced through state apparatus or worse,” Igboho remarked.
In addition, Igboho reflected on the violent raid on his home by security forces on July 1, 2021, an incident he attributed to his vocal opposition to the actions of Fulani herders during the Buhari administration. The raid led to the deaths of two people and the arrest of 13 others.
Turning to current national challenges, Igboho criticized the Federal Government’s failure to effectively tackle issues such as poverty, insecurity, and economic hardship. He pointed out that most Nigerians are struggling under severe economic conditions and the pervasive threat of kidnapping and other forms of insecurity.
“The majority of Nigerians are enduring a harsh reality of poverty, insecurity, and economic suffering. Yet, the Federal Government seems to be clueless in finding solutions to these pressing issues,” he said.
Igboho further questioned why Badenoch’s comments had been met with such backlash, defending her right to speak out. “When did it become a crime for someone to express their opinion on corruption or to declare their true identity as a member of the Yoruba ethnic group?” he asked.
Concluding his statement, Igboho urged President Tinubu to take decisive action and refocus Shettima’s priorities. “It is time for President Bola Tinubu to rein in Shettima and put an end to these needless verbal attacks, allowing him to concentrate on fulfilling his duties as vice president,” Igboho stated.
