See Reasons NNPC Ltd Temporarily Stop Operations at Port Harcourt Refinery
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced the temporary closure of the Port Harcourt Refining Company for scheduled maintenance.
In a statement released on Saturday, NNPC Ltd confirmed that the facility will undergo a one-month maintenance procedure beginning May 24, 2025. The announcement follows earlier reports highlighting the planned shutdown.
Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, stated that the maintenance aims to evaluate and enhance the refinery’s long-term operational efficiency and sustainability.
“This planned activity is part of our broader strategy to maintain optimal safety and performance at the Port Harcourt Refinery,” said Soneye. “The maintenance and sustainability assessment will kick off on May 24.”
He emphasized that NNPC Ltd is collaborating with key regulatory bodies, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, to ensure the process is carried out with maximum efficiency and transparency.
“Our priority remains securing Nigeria’s energy needs. We will continue to keep the public informed through our official communication channels,” Soneye added.
In response to concerns raised by local fuel marketers in Eleme—where the refinery is located—regarding alleged sabotage, Soneye dismissed the claims, affirming that the shutdown is solely for essential safety and operational assessments.
“The facility is still operational but is preparing for a critical safety maintenance exercise,” he noted. “This initiative aligns with international standards and will span approximately one month. We’ve also made arrangements to ensure consistent supply of AGO, kerosene, and other key products throughout this period.”
