See the Number of Lives Lost in Enugu-Onitsha Expressway Accident

A tragic accident on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has claimed the lives of six individuals after a truck, which was transporting foodstuffs, lost control and overturned near the Ugwu-Onyeama area in Enugu State.

Franklin Agbakoba, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Enugu, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.

The crash took place just a month after a deadly fuel tanker explosion at the same Ugwu-Onyeama spot, which claimed 23 lives. According to Agbakoba, the latest accident occurred around 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Emergency responders from the FRSC arrived promptly at the scene, rescuing three victims who were subsequently taken to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, for medical care.

The truck, which was transporting vegetables, fruits, and a few traders, was reportedly speeding when it lost control and tipped over. The accident involved nine people: eight men and one woman.

Sadly, five men and the woman died at the scene, while three injured men were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The bodies of the five Muslim victims were taken by their community members for burial, and the deceased woman’s family claimed her remains.

Agbakoba attributed the crash to excessive speed and a suspected brake failure, emphasizing that it was a single-vehicle accident. He expressed condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating event.
