A thunderstorm during Monday morning’s downpour caused four trees to fall at the Jattu market in Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo, resulting in the deaths of four people.
Council Chairman Marvellous Zibiri confirmed the fatalities while addressing journalists at the market.
“Between 8:00 and 9:00 AM on Monday, I received a call from my vice chairman and the supervisory councillor for the environment about the tragic incident at Jattu market,” Zibiri said. “During the rainfall, four trees fell simultaneously while people were seeking shelter beneath them, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuring several others.”
Zibiri added that the bodies of the deceased had been recovered and transported to the mortuary, while the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital.
Rescue operations continued at the scene as the trees were being cut down to ensure no one else was trapped underneath.
Describing the event as a tragedy, Zibiri expressed his condolences to the affected families and urged residents to remain indoors during heavy rainfalls.
