Senate to Begin Screening New Ministerial Nominees: See Date

The Senate is set to start the screening of seven new ministerial nominees on Tuesday. This announcement was made by Basheer Lado, the President’s special adviser on Senate matters, in a statement issued on Monday.
Lado, who previously served as a senator for Kano Central from 2011 to 2015, noted that the nominees have begun submitting their credentials as part of the National Assembly’s customary screening process. “The Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Sen. Basheer Lado, CON, has confirmed that the ministerial nominees have initiated documentation ahead of their screening and confirmation by the Senate, which begins on Tuesday, October 29, 2024,” the statement read.
The screening will follow Section 147 of the Nigerian Constitution, taking place in a Committee of the Whole where senators will have the opportunity to question the nominees.
This follows President Bola Tinubu’s decision last Wednesday to dismiss five ministers and appoint seven new ones, pending Senate confirmation. Additionally, ten ministers have been reassigned to new roles.
The newly appointed ministers include Nentawe Yilwatda, Muhammadu Dingyadi, Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu, Jumoke Oduwole, Idi Maiha, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, and Suwaiba Ahmad. In a letter to lawmakers last Thursday, President Tinubu urged them to prioritize the screening and confirmation of these nominees. If confirmed, the total number of ministers in Tinubu’s administration will rise to 50.
