Showunmi Wraps Up The Alternative Movement Townhall in Abeokuta, Criticizes ADC Coalition Supporters
Segun Showunmi, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has concluded the national townhall series of his socio-political initiative, The Alternative Movement, with the final gathering held in Abeokuta, Ogun State. During the event, he voiced strong criticism against those endorsing a coalition anchored by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which aims to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
The townhall tour, organized by The Alternative Movement, had traversed multiple regions across the country before culminating in the South West. At the concluding event, hosted at the DLK Event Centre in Abeokuta, Showunmi emphasized the movement’s mission to rekindle civic responsibility among Nigerians. He spoke against prevalent issues such as voter apathy, vote buying, ethnic bias, and the repeated recycling of long-standing political figures.
He underlined his keen interest in the direction of the 2027 general elections, stressing that it should matter to every citizen. According to Showunmi, politics should be about national development and not a platform for self-serving interests. He stated that The Alternative Movement champions merit and competency over partisan loyalty, advocating for the emergence of visionary leaders regardless of their party affiliation.
Speaking further, he dismissed the ADC-led coalition’s potential to mount a credible challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. In his view, the coalition lacks the strength and integrity needed to present a viable opposition.
In a separate media chat, Showunmi argued that the coalition would only gain traction if it considered a figure like former President Goodluck Jonathan as a presidential candidate, suggesting that the current arrangement lacks the influence to inspire widespread support.
The townhall meeting drew attendees from various political backgrounds, including members of the APC, PDP, Labour Party, and the coalition now aligned with the ADC.
Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, the Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, also spoke at the gathering. He acknowledged that while The Alternative Movement does not inherently oppose coalition politics, it is committed to meaningful and progressive change. He criticized many proponents of the ADC coalition for lacking the moral authority to challenge the current administration, pointing to their own histories of governance failures.
“A coalition built on genuine progressive ideals can serve as a strong catalyst for transformation,” Arabambi remarked. “But we must reject any attempt to rebrand proven failures as agents of reform.”
