Sokoto Monarch Killed by Bandits After Plea for Government Intervention for his Abduction

Sarkin Gobir
Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, the Sarkin Gobir of Gatawa District in Sokoto State, has been tragically killed by bandits following his abduction, torture, and dehumanization. The news of his death was confirmed by Idris4Peace on social media, who shared a distressing video released by the bandits showing the traditional ruler pleading for his life and urgently calling for government assistance.

Idris4Peace’s post detailed the brutal circumstances surrounding the Sarkin Gobir’s death: “Sarkin Gobir, a revered traditional leader in Sokoto, was executed by armed bandits after being taken hostage, tortured, and subjected to severe mistreatment. The bandits posted a video in which the leader desperately appeals to the government for help.”

FIRST CLASS GISTS had previously reported that Bawa and his son were kidnapped by the bandits in July. The abduction occurred near the Kwanar Maharba area while they were en route from Sokoto to Sabon Birni, Bawa’s hometown and the administrative center of the local government area.
Gobir, one of Bawa’s sons, recounted the harrowing incident: “When the bandits spotted the Emir’s vehicle, they opened fire, causing the tires to burst and the vehicle to crash. They then abducted my father and his driver, who is also his biological son.”
The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion for the release of their hostages. In a video released shortly after the abduction, the monarch narrated the dire conditions they faced and pleaded for urgent government intervention. The footage also captured one of the bandits directing the victims on what to say.
The killing of Sarkin Gobir marks a severe blow to the community and highlights the escalating violence and insecurity in the region.
