Sowore Criticizes Disparity in Nigerian Justice System Following Death Sentence for Car Thieves
Omoyele Sowore, a prominent advocate for human rights and justice, has expressed his disapproval of the Nigerian judicial system. His comments were sparked by a recent ruling from the Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti, which sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the armed robbery of a Toyota Camry.
The convicted individuals, Akingbade David, Michael Mayowa, and Ibrahim Mukaila, were charged with robbing Gbenga Ajayi at gunpoint on March 1, 2019. They were arrested and subsequently tried for armed robbery and conspiracy.
Reacting to the court’s decision, Sowore took to his official X handle on Friday, June 21, to voice his disbelief. He pointed out the inconsistency in the justice system, where petty criminals face harsh penalties while politicians accused of massive corruption enjoy freedom. Sowore highlighted that a court had blocked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from investigating former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi for alleged corruption and money laundering involving billions of Naira.
Sowore remarked, “Unbelievable! Two former governors of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and Kayode Fayemi, embezzled billions of Naira. Fayose is currently on trial for ₦6.9 billion fraud and money laundering, yet I doubt he will ever see a jail cell, let alone face the death penalty.”
He further criticized the justice system for allowing Fayemi to evade investigation and for doubting that Fayose, who is on trial for significant financial crimes, will receive any substantial punishment, while car thieves are sentenced to death.
Sowore concluded by questioning the fairness of the Nigerian judicial system, saying, “Fayemi even secured a court order preventing the EFCC from probing him, but the system is quick to hang individuals for ste
