Stay or Go? Bauchi PDP in Turmoil Over Bala Mohammed Defection Rumours

Stay or Go? Bauchi PDP in Turmoil Over Bala Mohammed Defection Rumours

Political uncertainty has deepened within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State as conflicting voices emerge over rumours suggesting that Governor Bala Mohammed may be considering a defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Amid the speculation, a pro-democracy group, the Kauran Bauchi Political Concern Group, has called on the governor to remain in the PDP, stressing that his continued loyalty is crucial to maintaining public trust and political stability in the state. According to The Punch and Daily Trust, similar concerns have been raised in recent weeks as internal tensions persist within opposition parties across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the group, its chairman, Rayyan Adamu, reminded the governor of his earlier assurances that he would not abandon the party despite mounting pressure. He described Mohammed as a leader known for standing by his word and urged him to uphold that reputation.

Adamu also encouraged the governor to draw inspiration from respected Northern figures such as Sa’adu Zungurand Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, noting that adherence to their principles would further strengthen his standing as a prominent political figure in the region. The group maintained that the governor’s people-oriented policies have continued to earn him goodwill, particularly among religious leaders who frequently commend his leadership.

While urging him to resist calls to defect, the group warned that such a move could undermine both state and national political interests, adding that consistency in leadership remains vital during periods of political uncertainty.

However, in a contrasting position, another political bloc, the Kaura Force Movement, has expressed unconditional support for whatever decision the governor ultimately makes regarding his political future. The group’s leader, Bello Maiwada, described Mohammed as an experienced administrator and a committed advocate of democratic values.

Maiwada highlighted the governor’s record in infrastructure development, institutional reforms, and social investment programmes, noting that these achievements have strengthened governance in Bauchi State. Reports monitored by The Nation Newspaper and The Guardian Nigeria also point to growing debates within the PDP over leadership direction and party cohesion.

He further revealed that the movement — comprising youths, professionals, and civil society actors — is prepared to back the governor’s future ambitions, including contributing significantly to campaign logistics if he chooses to contest for another office.

The group also acknowledged the lingering internal disagreements within the PDP, describing them as long-standing issues that require dialogue and consensus to resolve. It warned that a weakened opposition could have broader implications for Nigeria’s democratic balance.

As discussions continue, political observers note that Governor Mohammed’s next move could have far-reaching consequences, not only for Bauchi State but also for the evolving dynamics of party politics nationwide.
