Tai Solarin University Renamed in Honor of Ijebu Monarch

In a historic gesture aimed at honoring traditional leadership and cultural legacy, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced the renaming of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in honor of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The announcement was made during a special state function held in Ijebu-Ode, drawing widespread attention from political leaders, academic stakeholders, and members of the royal court. Governor Abiodun described the move as a tribute to a monarch whose contributions to education, peace, and development in Ijebuland and beyond have stood the test of time.

“Oba Sikiru Adetona is not just a revered traditional ruler; he is a living institution. His vision, integrity, and unwavering support for education have shaped generations,” Abiodun stated during the ceremony.

The university, previously named after the iconic educationist Tai Solarin, will now bear the name Sikiru Adetona University of Education, Science and Technology (SAUEST), marking a new chapter in its identity. According to the governor, the name change reflects the institution’s evolving role as a center for not only teacher training but also science and technological advancement.

Stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions to the decision. While some applaud the state government for recognizing a revered traditional leader, others have called for caution in renaming institutions already tied to national icons like Tai Solarin. Nonetheless, the renaming has sparked renewed interest in the legacy of the Awujale, who has reigned for over six decades and is widely respected for his progressive leadership and philanthropic efforts—particularly in the education sector.

Oba Sikiru Adetona, known for his foresight and advocacy for good governance, established a foundation that funds scholarships and supports civic education. His influence has extended far beyond the borders of Ijebuland, earning him national recognition as a custodian of both tradition and progress.

The transition process for the university’s new identity is expected to roll out in phases, including updates to institutional documents, signage, and digital presence.

As Ogun State writes this new chapter in its educational history, the renaming of TASUED serves as a powerful symbol of the enduring connection between cultural heritage and modern deve

lopment.
