Texas Floods Claim Over 100 Lives During Holiday Weekend
KERRVILLE, Texas — Devastating flash floods swept through central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend, claiming the lives of more than 100 people and leaving several others missing. Among those unaccounted for are campers from a local Christian summer retreat. The disaster struck communities along the Guadalupe River, prompting an extensive search-and-rescue operation and raising concerns about emergency preparedness and response times.
Torrential Rainfall Triggers Catastrophic Flash Flooding
The flooding occurred at a particularly vulnerable time — early morning hours during a long holiday weekend — when most residents were still asleep. The Texas Hill Country, with its compact, dry terrain, is especially susceptible to rapid runoff during heavy storms. In this case, a powerful weather system dumped nearly a foot (30 cm) of rain in just a few hours before dawn on Friday.
Although a flood watch had been issued Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service escalated its warning around 4 a.m. Friday, signaling a high risk of severe flooding and loss of life. By 5:20 a.m., rising waters were already being reported in Kerrville. The Guadalupe River swelled dramatically, surging more than 26 feet (8 meters) in under an hour as runoff rushed downhill into the waterway.
Ongoing Search Efforts Amid Rising Casualty Numbers
Officials in Kerr County, a region known for its summer camps and outdoor recreation, confirmed the recovery of 84 bodies — 28 of them children — as of Monday. Combined with fatalities reported in nearby areas, the total death toll has reached at least 104. Authorities anticipate that number could increase in the coming days as search teams continue combing through debris and flooded areas.
Among the missing are 10 young girls and a camp counselor from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp situated along the river’s edge. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams navigating challenging conditions in hopes of finding survivors.
