Three killed as Police Operation Dismantles Notorious Anambra Robbery Gang

Three members of a notorious five-man armed robbery gang, which had been terrorizing Onitsha and its surroundings, were killed during a police operation on Sunday.

The confrontation occurred at Ibekwe Junction in Inland Town, Onitsha, where police officers engaged the gang in a gun battle. Reports indicate that while three robbers were killed, one escaped with gunshot wounds, and another was captured.

Local residents expressed relief over the incident, noting that peace is likely to return to the area. Mrs. Ijeoma, a resident, stated, “This gang was notorious for carjackings at gunpoint in Onitsha. They tried to ambush a luxury vehicle at the junction, not realizing it was occupied by police officers on patrol.”

She added, “We are grateful for the police action and hope this marks the end of their reign of terror.”

During questioning, the surviving gang member, whose name has not been disclosed, revealed that they intended to steal the vehicle, mistakenly believing it belonged to a civilian. “As we approached to attack, the police responded swiftly, killing three of us and recovering two firearms,” he said.

He also disclosed that the weapons used by the gang were supplied by a known cultist, who not only provided them with firearms but also acted as a receiver for their stolen goods.

An anonymous police source confirmed that investigations into the gang’s activities are ongoing and that efforts are underway to locate the remaining member who fled.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, praised the quick response and bravery of the officers involved in the operation, reiterating the commitment to combat criminal activities in the state.
