Tinubu Approves 50% Power Subsidy for Universities and Hospitals

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant 50% electricity subsidy for public universities, teaching hospitals, polytechnics, and colleges of education, offering relief to institutions burdened by high energy costs.

The announcement was made by Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Health, in Kaduna on Sunday. Dr. Alausa confirmed that the subsidy will cover the electricity expenses of these institutions, with the Ministry of Power working on the financial arrangements.

This move comes amid complaints from higher education institutions about skyrocketing electricity bills. For instance, the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan faced a dispute over a N400 million bill with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). Similarly, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria was alarmed by a monthly bill of N300 million, leading to concerns about an annual debt of N3.6 billion to the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KADCO). The University of Lagos, facing over N1 billion in arrears, was recently disconnected by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC). The total estimated annual electricity cost for ten major public universities is around N247.7 billion.

At the inauguration of the National Ear Care Centre and other health projects in Kaduna, Dr. Alausa highlighted that these initiatives align with the Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA), aiming to provide accessible and affordable healthcare. The new facilities include a molecular laboratory, an oxygen plant, student accommodation, and an auditorium.

Dr. Alausa emphasized the administration’s commitment to enhancing the healthcare sector, including improving training and salaries for healthcare professionals to retain them. He also mentioned the Federal Ministry of Health’s plans to introduce a nationwide electronic medical system to improve patient care and data management.
