Tinubu Cites Achievements to Urge Cancellation of Planned August Protest
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has highlighted his administration’s accomplishments as reasons for Nigerians to cancel the planned protest scheduled for August 1-10, 2024, aimed at addressing economic hardship.
During a meeting with a delegation of Islamic leaders led by Sheikh Bala Lau at the State House on Thursday, Tinubu emphasized several key initiatives. He pointed to the launch of the student loan scheme, the implementation of a new N70,000 minimum wage, and the establishment of a consumer credit initiative as significant measures taken to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
“We are reworking the social welfare scheme to reach the ward level, ensuring direct support to the poor and vulnerable,” Tinubu stated. He assured that the government is committed to reconnecting with local wards to effectively distribute allowances to those in need.
He elaborated on the benefits of the student loan program, which will cover school fees and provide financial support for education. The consumer credit initiative, according to the President, will help citizens purchase cars and houses, with the option to repay over time. Additionally, he noted that the minimum wage has been increased by over 100 percent.
President Tinubu urged those planning the protest to reconsider, warning against turning Nigeria into a crisis zone like Sudan.
Recently, the Nigerian National Assembly passed the new Minimum Wage Act, and the federal government began disbursing funds to beneficiaries of the student loan scheme. In April, the Tinubu administration also approved the launch of a N100 billion consumer credit program for Nigerians.
