Tinubu Declares Nigeria Has Overcome Economic Crisis, Governors No Longer Borrow for Salaries

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday night said Nigeria has successfully navigated significant economic challenges under his administration, highlighting that state governors no longer resort to bank loans to pay workers’ salaries.

Tinubu made the remarks while hosting religious and traditional leaders for an interfaith breaking of the fast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. His spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the statements in a press release following the event.

“I am just grateful, one person among millions, that I have been given the opportunity to serve. And all I can do is promise that I will continue to be faithful in discharging my duty. I can report that the economy has turned the corner,” Tinubu said.

The President added that pensioners were receiving gradual relief and that the administration had steered the nation away from the brink of bankruptcy. “It was very daunting and challenging when we took over. But today, I can say with pride and joy that we have survived. No governor in this country is running around the banks to borrow money to pay the salaries of their workers,” he noted.

Tinubu also assured Nigerians that the nation would resist agents of instability and underscored the importance of religious and traditional leaders in fostering peace, moral guidance, and unity across communities.

During the event, the Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, expressed appreciation for the President’s efforts in bringing leaders of both major religions together, describing the gathering as a symbol of national unity. He led prayers for peace, prosperity, and divine guidance for the President and the nation, alongside representatives from the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and the Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed Sa‘ad Abubakar III.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), represented by Archbishop Daniel Okoh and Dr. Stephen Baba-Panya, President of The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), reaffirmed the church’s support for the Tinubu administration’s economic and security initiatives.

Traditional rulers and religious leaders from all six geopolitical zones attended the event, highlighting the federal government’s emphasis on inclusive dialogue and national cohesion.

The President’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by his administration to stabilize the economy, improve fiscal management at state levels, and strengthen Nigeria’s security framework while fostering interfaith harmony.
