Tinubu Greenlights Fresh Military Arsenal to Intensify Nigeria’s Counter-Terror Offensive

In Abuja, Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the acquisition of additional military equipment to reinforce ongoing operations against insurgency and terrorism across Nigeria, as security forces intensify efforts to contain threats in several parts of the country.
The development was disclosed on Thursday by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, a retired general, following a high-level security briefing held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Musa explained that the service chiefs provided the President with a detailed assessment of current military operations and the overall security situation nationwide. According to him, the briefing enabled the President to obtain first-hand information about developments in conflict-affected areas.
“The meeting gave Mr. President the opportunity to receive direct updates from the service chiefs on the realities on ground,” the defence minister said, noting that some reports in the media have not fully reflected the scale of ongoing military engagements.
Musa acknowledged that security forces have faced recent attacks from insurgent groups in some regions but stressed that troops have continued to respond decisively. He revealed that several senior militant commanders have been eliminated during recent operations, while troops also recovered weapons and other assets from terrorist groups.
The minister also paid tribute to soldiers who lost their lives during operations, describing their deaths as deeply regrettable. However, he maintained that the Armed Forces remain resolute in their mission to safeguard the country.
“The dedication of our armed forces to protecting Nigeria and its citizens remains firm and unwavering,” he said.
Musa further appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of the military, explaining that extremist groups often intensify their attacks during the holy month of Ramadan. He added that military commanders have adjusted operational strategies to address this pattern.
With the approval of new military hardware and strengthened collaboration among security agencies, the defence minister expressed optimism that the armed forces would continue to record progress in the fight against terrorism.
“Our security agencies are working together with a common goal, and we remain committed to defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace,” he added.
Reports of the President’s approval for additional military equipment were also highlighted by several Nigerian media organisations, including The Punch, Vanguard Newspaper, and Channels Television, which noted that the decision forms part of the federal government’s broader strategy to strengthen national security and support frontline troops.
