Tinubu Honoured Buhari More Than Buhari Ever Did for Others – Shehu Sani

Sheu Sani
Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has praised President Bola Tinubu for the extraordinary respect he showed towards the late former President Muhammadu Buhari — a level of recognition Sani says Buhari never extended to anyone else during his lifetime.
President Tinubu marked Buhari’s passing by declaring a national holiday, attending the funeral in person, renaming a federal university after him, meeting with his family, and holding a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in his honour.
Sani called the tribute “unprecedented” and worthy of recognition. In a post shared on X, the former lawmaker pointed out that Tinubu’s actions stood in stark contrast to Buhari’s own track record of not publicly honouring other statesmen in similar ways.
He wrote:
> “President Tinubu physically attended Buhari’s funeral, met his family, declared a public holiday, chaired a FEC meeting in his honour, and even renamed a university after him — things Buhari never did for anyone else.
Yet, critics say Tinubu is ‘politicising Buhari’s death’. What would they have said if he had done nothing? Politics can be very strange.”
Sani’s comments have sparked widespread discussion online, with the post drawing thousands of interactions at the time of reporting.
His remarks follow criticism from opposition voices like the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which accused Tinubu’s administration of using Buhari’s death as a political tool to boost its image.
Responding to the claims, Presidential Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, rejected the ADC’s statement, calling it a calculated attempt to stir outrage.
He noted the irony in the opposition’s stance, suggesting it was they, not the administration, who were exploiting the situation for attention.
> “The accusation that Tinubu is leveraging Buhari’s death for political gain is disingenuous. In truth, it insults the many Nigerians who sincerely mourned Buhari’s passing,” Dare said.
“The burial was dignified, attended by global leaders, and followed widely by the public — a fitting tribute to a former head of state.”
Dare concluded by saying that President Tinubu is not in pursuit of empty praise but is letting his actions and accomplishments speak for themselves, regardless of political noise from opposing parties.
