Tinubu, Starmer to Deepen Nigeria–UK Security Ties Amid Rising Regional Threats
Nigeria and the United Kingdom are poised to strengthen their security partnership as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu engages British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in high-level talks focused on counter-terrorism and regional stability.
Speaking during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, President Tinubu underscored the urgency of enhanced collaboration between both nations in tackling insecurity, particularly across West Africa and the Sahel region. According to The Punch, the President noted that Nigeria bears a significant responsibility in maintaining peace within the sub-region and requires sustained international support to meet evolving threats.
Tinubu revealed that his discussions with the British Prime Minister would center on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategies, as well as broader concerns affecting stability across neighboring countries. He emphasized that the United Kingdom remains a critical partner in addressing these security challenges.
“Our region continues to face complex and interconnected threats,” Tinubu stated, adding that cooperation with global allies like the UK is essential in mitigating the risks.
The banquet, held Wednesday night, formed part of activities marking Tinubu’s official visit to the UK, his first as President. The Guardian Nigeria reports that the event also marked a historic moment, as Tinubu became the first Nigerian leader to address a gathering at Windsor Castle, a site deeply rooted in British royal history.
In a reflective tone, the President recalled his time in exile during Nigeria’s military era under General Sani Abacha. He expressed gratitude to the UK for offering him refuge during that period, noting that British authorities, including the Metropolitan Police, provided protection amid threats from the military regime.
Describing those years as “a dark chapter,” Tinubu acknowledged the role of the UK in supporting pro-democracy advocates. According to The Nation Newspaper, he highlighted that such solidarity remains a defining element of Nigeria–UK relations.
Beyond security, the President also spoke on the enduring institutional and cultural ties between both countries. He pointed out that Nigeria’s legal and parliamentary systems continue to reflect elements of British governance traditions, reinforcing a long-standing historical connection.
Tinubu further praised the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those working within the UK’s National Health Service. As noted by Daily Times Nigeria, he commended Nigerian healthcare professionals for their significant role in delivering quality medical services across Britain.
He also referenced prominent athletes of Nigerian descent, including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Maro Itoje, and Anthony Joshua, describing them as symbols of the strong human link between both nations—a sentiment widely echoed across social media platforms following the banquet.
The President reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Commonwealth, describing the country as a key player within the 56-member bloc. He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, highlighting the energy of its youth population and the resilience of its people.
The ongoing visit, which spans March 18 to 19, is Nigeria’s first presidential state visit to the UK in nearly four decades. Analysts, as cited by The Guardian, expect the trip to yield multiple agreements covering defence, trade, and infrastructure development—including a major financing arrangement aimed at upgrading key port facilities in Lagos.
Concluding his address, Tinubu proposed a toast to the enduring relationship between both countries, expressing confidence in a future defined by stronger cooperation and shared progress.
