Tradition Under Threat: Kwara Woman’s House Set Ablaze
Tradition Under Threat: Kwara Woman’s House Set Ablaze

This report concerns a Nigerian woman, a lawful property owner and practitioner of traditional religion (ONÍṢẸ̀ṢẸ), whose house in Ilorin, Kwara State, was deliberately set on fire.

The woman legally constructed her home in Ilorin, exercising her constitutional right to own property and live where she chooses. Since moving into the predominantly Muslim community, she was repeatedly threatened and intimidated solely because of her religious beliefs.
She reported these threats to the local police, who summoned the individuals involved and reminded them that she is legally entitled to live and build a house anywhere in Nigeria. Despite this official warning, the harassment escalated.
She was explicitly warned:
> “If you refuse to stop practicing your traditional religion, be prepared to see your house set on fire.”
On January 1, 2026, while she was away attending the Osun Festival at another residence, a neighbor called to alert her that her house in Ilorin was ablaze. The fire was later confirmed to have completely destroyed the property, confirming that the earlier threats were genuine and that the act constituted arson.
This report is being shared to:
Record the incident publicly
Ensure her safety
Hold perpetrators accountable
Alert authorities, media, and human-rights organizations
Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians. No citizen should be threatened, attacked, or displaced because of their religion or beliefs. Justice will be pursued.
