Residents of Egbu in Owerri North Local Government Area, Imo State, are in mourning after four young men lost their lives while trying to clear waste from a sewage pit in Umunwokoji Umuayalu Village.
According to reports, the incident took a bizarre turn when the men, who were working in the pit, failed to emerge after taking turns to enter. A local, who requested anonymity, explained that the first man entered the pit but was unable to climb out. Efforts to rescue him led to the subsequent entry of three more men, all of whom also perished under mysterious circumstances.
The bodies of the victims were later retrieved and taken to the mortuary, though the exact cause of their deaths remains unknown.
Environmental engineer Sunday Ihekire commented on the tragedy, emphasizing the critical need for strict safety measures in such dangerous tasks. “This incident highlights the crucial importance of adhering to safety protocols in hazardous activities. Our hearts go out to the victims’ families during this difficult time,” he said.
One local resident described the event as an ill omen, noting that one of the deceased was a newlywed with a one-month-old child.
