Tragic incident in Abia as Two Children and Three Adults Die in Auto Accident

A tragic collision on Sunday resulted in the deaths of two children and three adults. The accident occurred when an Abia Line Network Sienna vehicle, traveling from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State to Aba in Abia State, collided with a Mack truck near Umuika Junction along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.

The Abia State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the fatalities during a press briefing on Monday. According to ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, the accident scene has been inspected, and an investigation is underway.

FRSC Abia State Sector Commander, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, reported that the crash, which happened at Egbelu Mbutu near Cherubim bus stop in Isiala Ngwa South LGA, involved a Toyota Previa (registration number BKL 291 ZJ) and a stationary Mack truck. Out of the eleven people involved—six male adults, two female adults, and three male children—four died at the scene, and three others were injured.

A rescue team from RS9.32 KM78 Aba Unit Command arrived promptly, conducting rescue operations and transporting the injured to Ronald Hospital, Umuikaa. The deceased were taken to Mighty Moon Mortuary near Umuikaa Junction.

Following further medical evaluations, it was confirmed that one male adult later died in the hospital, raising the death toll to five (three male adults and two male children). Two individuals, one male and one female, sustained injuries, with the male victim transferred to Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for advanced treatment. The female victim remains at Ronald Hospital, Umuikaa.

The accident left three adults and one child unharmed, with the surviving child handed over to Umuikaa Police Station. Preliminary investigations suggest driver fatigue as a possible cause of the crash, with a detailed report to follow upon completion of the FRSC’s investigation.
