TRAGIC INCIDENT: Shock as Soldier kills himself at Abia Army Camp
A soldier from the 14 Brigade Headquarters at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Barrack in Ebem Ohafia, Abia State, attached to the 144 Battalion’s Forward Operation Base (FOB) at Ngwa High School, Abayi, Osisioma, has committed suicide.
ABN TV reported that the tragic incident occurred on Saturday.
The soldier, identified as Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Vitalis from Okpuala in Ngor-Okpuala, Imo State, shot himself in front of the FOB gate.
The reasons behind his decision remain unknown as no suicide note was found. Security sources indicate that a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the motive, cautioning against premature speculation.
Sources also mentioned that CSM Vitalis had no known issues of domestic violence or disciplinary actions against him at either the Battalion or Brigade Headquarters.
Before the incident, the soldier had been missing for two weeks, with no communication despite attempts by colleagues and military authorities to reach him.
He unexpectedly returned to the camp and ended his life, leaving his fellow soldiers stunned. Vitalis was nearing retirement in October, adding to the shock and confusion surrounding his death.
