Troops Crush ESN Militants in Fierce Battle, Recover Cache of Weapons
On December 27, 2024, troops from the 34 Artillery Brigade successfully neutralized members of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an operation in Osina, located in the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.
The operation was launched in response to an urgent distress signal regarding an IPOB/ESN assault on Osina Community. The troops, who were on a routine patrol, swiftly engaged the militants with superior firepower, forcing them to retreat in disarray. Unfortunately, two security personnel were killed in action, and one is still missing. The attackers seized weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and a tear gas launcher. The bodies of the fallen soldiers were recovered, and the troops immediately pursued the fleeing militants.
The troops reestablished contact with the insurgents in the Nkwachi Community, where another fierce firefight took place. One of the militants was neutralized, and others fled into nearby forests, unable to withstand the onslaught. An AK-47 rifle with a loaded magazine was recovered.
Continuing their operation, the troops pressed into Umalouma Forest, where they encountered the militants again. Overpowered by the military’s firepower, the insurgents abandoned their weapons and fled, leaving behind significant casualties. During this phase, the following items were recovered: five AK-47 rifles, one Fabrique Nationale rifle, two magazines, and one tear gas launcher.
Military forces are continuing their operations in the area, tracking the injured militants and dismantling their hideouts. The military urges members of IPOB/ESN and other criminal groups to surrender or face further military action. The Brigade is committed to ensuring the people of Imo State experience a peaceful and secure holiday season.
We call on the law-abiding citizens of Imo State to assist in the ongoing operations by providing crucial intelligence on the movements and hideouts of these criminal elements. Together, we can rid the state of violence and insecurity.
