Troops Neutralize Bandit, Destroy Camps in Benue
Makurdi, Nigeria — August 5, 2025
In a continued effort to rid Benue State of criminal elements threatening peace and security, troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralized a notorious bandit and dismantled several hideouts used by criminal gangs in the region.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of Monday, was part of ongoing clearance missions under Operation Whirl Stroke. Acting on credible intelligence, the troops stormed a remote forest in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, where the bandits had established a stronghold.
According to military sources, the soldiers engaged the criminals in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the death of one bandit, while others fled with varying degrees of gunshot wounds. The troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, rounds of ammunition, and communication gadgets used by the gang.
“The success of this operation sends a strong message to criminal elements in the region. We are determined to restore peace and ensure the safety of all residents,” said a senior army official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The troops also discovered and destroyed multiple makeshift camps believed to have been used for planning attacks, kidnapping operations, and illegal arms storage. Items such as motorcycles, food supplies, and personal effects were found and destroyed to prevent reuse.
Residents of the area expressed relief following the operation, praising the military for their swift response and bravery. A local youth leader in Katsina-Ala stated, “For months we’ve lived in fear. This action by the army gives us hope that normalcy can return to our community.”
Benue State has faced increased insecurity in recent years, with clashes between armed groups and security forces becoming more frequent. The Nigerian Army has intensified its operations in the North Central zone, targeting known flashpoints and aiming to dismantle the network of armed gangs responsible for killings, kidnappings, and destruction of property.
Security analysts have commended the troops for their professionalism and called for sustained pressure on criminal groups. “What we need is consistent action, community support, and better intelligence coordination,” said Dr. Tunde Okafor, a security consultant based in Abuja.
The Nigerian Army has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and order across Benue and neighbor
ing states.
