Trump Signals Quick End to US-Iran Conflict Amid Middle East Tensions, Oil Market Volatility

President Donald Trump on Monday assured that U.S. military operations in Iran are expected to conclude soon, offering a momentary boost to global markets unsettled by escalating hostilities across the Middle East.

The conflict intensified after Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership in Tehran, prompting fresh missile and drone strikes on Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and Israel. Strategic chokepoints, notably the Strait of Hormuz, remain affected, disrupting maritime oil transit and sending energy prices soaring.

Speaking at a news conference in Florida, Trump described the campaign as a “short-term excursion” and vowed that any renewed resistance would face harsher measures. “It’s going to be ended soon, and if it starts up again they’ll be hit even harder,” he said. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards asserted that they, not the Americans, would dictate the war’s conclusion.

Markets reacted swiftly to the announcement, with Wall Street recovering into positive territory, and Asian exchanges in Tokyo and Seoul opening higher. Crude oil prices, which had spiked past $100 a barrel on Monday—the highest since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine—dropped up to five percent following Trump’s comments.

The conflict coincides with celebrations in Iran over the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei. Tens of thousands of Iranians gathered in Tehran, while allied groups like Yemen’s Houthis and Lebanon’s Hezbollah pledged support. Russia also expressed unwavering backing. Analysts describe the new supreme leader as a hardliner with a history of overseeing security crackdowns.

Meanwhile, the Gulf region faces mounting threats to oil infrastructure. Recent missile strikes targeted Bahrain’s Al Ma’ameer facility, prompting Bapco to declare force majeure, with Qatar and Kuwait following suit. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting a drone attack on an eastern oil field near the UAE border. Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted, with shipping giant MSC suspending select exports.

The conflict has also escalated in Israel and Lebanon. In Israel, missiles fired from Iran triggered air raid warnings, resulting in casualties, while Israeli forces reportedly struck Iranian launchers in retaliation. In Lebanon, exchanges between Hezbollah and Israeli forces have led to hundreds of deaths and injuries, with Joseph Aoun accusing Hezbollah of destabilizing the state.

As global attention focuses on the strategic energy corridor, diplomatic efforts are underway. French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that a defensive mission might escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz once the peak of hostilities subsides.

The ongoing conflict underscores the fragility of energy supplies and regional security, with markets, policymakers, and central banks closely monitoring developments in the Gulf. Analysts warn that prolonged instability could further disrupt crude exports, escalate energy costs, and reverberate across the global economy.
