U.S. Embassy Raises Terror Alert, Urges Heightened Vigilance Around American Facilities and Schools in Nigeria

U.S. Embassy Raises Terror Alert, Urges Heightened Vigilance Around American Facilities and Schools in Nigeria

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a fresh security advisory warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American diplomatic facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria, urging citizens to remain vigilant and take additional safety precautions.

In the notice released to American nationals in the country, the embassy said the alert was issued to inform U.S. citizens of a potential security risk around American premises and institutions linked to the United States.

The advisory specifically mentioned the U.S. Embassy Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos as locations where individuals should exercise increased caution. U.S.-affiliated schools across the country were also highlighted as areas requiring heightened awareness.

Although authorities did not reveal details about the origin, timing, or specific nature of the threat, the mission stressed that security awareness and proactive safety measures are essential in preventing potential risks.

According to the embassy, American citizens should adopt flexible travel patterns when visiting sensitive locations, including varying routes and travel schedules. The mission also urged individuals to avoid routines that could make their movements predictable.

The advisory further encouraged citizens to stay alert in public places, maintain a low profile, and carefully assess their surroundings at all times. Americans were also advised to avoid crowded gatherings, demonstrations, and other situations that could increase exposure to security threats.

In addition, the embassy recommended practical personal safety steps such as keeping mobile phones fully charged for emergencies, reviewing personal security plans with family members, and identifying emergency exits when entering buildings or public facilities.

Security experts note that diplomatic facilities and international schools can sometimes be considered symbolic targets during periods of heightened security tension, prompting embassies to issue precautionary advisories even when threats are not fully detailed.

The latest warning comes shortly after the United States Embassy in Nigeria cancelled visa appointments scheduled for March 4, 2026, at the embassy in Abuja, citing concerns over potential protests in the Federal Capital Territory.

While the embassy emphasised that the advisory is precautionary, it urged U.S. citizens in Nigeria to closely monitor official updates and follow all recommended safety measures as authorities continue to assess the security situation.

Officials added that maintaining situational awareness and taking preventive actions remain the most effective ways for individuals to protect themselves during periods of heightened alert.
