Uche Okwukwu, Ikwerre-born, Elected President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide
Breaking News:

Bar. Uche Okwukwu has been elected as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, marking a historic achievement as the first Ikwerre man to hold this prestigious position.
The election, held on January 10, 2025, follows a contentious vote earlier on January 5, 2025, by a faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which had declared Chief Dr. Jackson Omenazu, another Ikwerre individual, as President. However, the majority of Ohanaeze members rejected this earlier election, affirming today as the legitimate date for choosing the new leader of the prominent Igbo socio-cultural group.
Okwukwu’s election is hailed as a groundbreaking moment for the Ikwerre people and is viewed as a step towards strengthening unity among the Ndigbo worldwide. His leadership is expected to address the historical tensions, particularly those concerning the Ikwerre people, who became recognized as a distinct ethnic group in Nigeria following the Civil War, citing alleged discrimination from the Igbo heartland during that time.
In recent years, many Ikwerre individuals have advocated for reintegration with the Igbo nation, emphasizing the deep cultural and historical connections. With Bar. Okwukwu assuming leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, his tenure is expected to play a key role in promoting unity among the Ndigbo, especially in the South-South and northern regions of Nigeria.
This election marks a pivotal moment in the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, with hopes that under Okwukwu’s leadership, the organization will strengthen the ties among all Igbo-speaking communities and affirm their collective identity as
one people.
