As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State prepares for its local government primaries on August 18, 2024, tensions are rising within the party.

Recent social media videos have captured senior PDP figures accusing the state executive and influential leaders of attempting to impose candidates. In one video, Falilate Arike Yusuf (popularly known as “Ero-Arike”) from Iragbiji Local Government Area expresses her discontent, claiming the party has broken a promise to award her husband, Akeem, the chairmanship ticket. Yusuf reveals her frustration over the party’s failure to honor this commitment despite her financial contributions and efforts.
In another video, a PDP leader, Chief Ade, cautions against any attempt by Yeye Dupe (the governor’s sister) to impose candidates. He warns that such actions could negatively impact the party’s performance in the upcoming gubernatorial election, stating, “If she imposes candidates, Ademola Adeleke will face serious repercussions in 2026.”
Further fueling the unrest, Olalekan Olawole, the PDP ex-officio for Ife East council, reported an alleged assassination attempt on him by political thugs, purportedly sent by a rival party leader. Olawole, who is vying for the chairmanship of Ife East Local Government, has taken refuge at the Moore Divisional Police Headquarters.
In response, Oladele Bamiji, the PDP Director of Media and Publicity, acknowledged the concerns but described them as typical of the pre-election period. He suggested that the issues being raised were attempts by some members to manipulate the party’s decisions. Regarding the alleged attack on Olawole, Bamiji noted that the individual was merely seeking safety at the police station while making the claims.
