Violence Erupts in Wike’s Ward During Rivers LG Election

The local government elections in Rivers State have turned chaotic, with intense gunfire reported in the Rumuepirikom community, the hometown of Chief Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers, is currently in conflict with the sitting governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who has proceeded with the grassroots elections despite significant opposition.
Eyewitnesses indicate that armed individuals entered the area, instructing residents to remain indoors. As election officials attempted to access the ward in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the attackers, believed to be political thugs, launched a violent assault.
At least one person has been hospitalized due to a gunshot wound sustained during the incident.
