Was Hell Really Made for Humans? A Biblical Perspective

One of the most frequently asked questions about Christianity is:
“If God is loving, why would He create a place like hell to punish people forever?”
At first glance, this question seems reasonable, even compassionate. But it’s important to examine what the Bible actually says about the purpose of hell. When we do, a different picture emerges—one that reveals not only God’s justice, but also His original intent.

What Did Jesus Say About Hell’s Purpose?
In Matthew 25:41 (KJV), Jesus makes a striking statement during His teaching on the final judgment:
> “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”
This verse provides a critical insight:
Hell was originally created not for humans, but for the devil and his angels.
In other words, hell wasn’t part of God’s plan for humanity. It was designed as a place of judgment for spiritual beings who rebelled against Him—specifically Satan (the devil) and the fallen angels who followed him.

A Misunderstood Question
The assumption that God created hell to torment people contradicts the message of Scripture. While hell is indeed real and eternal, and some will tragically go there by choice (through rejection of Christ), its creation was never intended for mankind.
So when people ask, “Why would a loving God send people to hell?”, the question is actually based on a misunderstanding. God, in His love, made a way for all humans to escape eternal separation from Him—through Jesus Christ. He does not desire for anyone to perish:
> “The Lord is… not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
— 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)

God’s Desire Has Always Been Relationship, Not Condemnation
From the beginning, God’s heart has been to dwell in fellowship with humanity. Scripture is filled with evidence of His mercy, patience, and long-suffering love. Hell becomes a reality for people only when they choose to reject God’s offer of salvation—despite His constant pursuit.
It’s also important to understand that God does not force anyone into a relationship with Him. Love requires free will. Those who ultimately end up in hell do so by their own refusal to
