“We Are Not Criminals!” – Nigerian Government Responds to Anti-Nigerian Protests in Ghana

The Nigerian government has issued a firm response to rising anti-Nigerian rhetoric in Ghana, following a viral video showing protesters demanding the mass expulsion of Nigerians over alleged involvement in criminal activities, Eyes of Lagos reports.
The footage, which emerged on July 28, 2025, captured a crowd of Ghanaian citizens chanting and calling for Nigerians to leave their country, accusing them of fueling crime. The video has since triggered heated discussions across West Africa.
NIDCOM Condemns Stereotyping
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), condemned the protest and the narrative behind it, labeling the claims as “harmful, inaccurate, and inflammatory.”
> “Nigerians are not criminals. They are among the most hardworking and law-abiding people you’ll meet,” she said, urging Ghanaians to avoid generalizing based on the actions of a few.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that while some individuals may be involved in unlawful acts, the majority of Nigerians living in Ghana are peaceful, productive members of society who contribute to the local economy.
Rumors of Attacks Unverified
Addressing unconfirmed reports on social media alleging attacks on Nigerian-owned businesses and properties in Ghana, Dabiri-Erewa clarified that no such incidents have been officially verified.
> “Spreading unverified information can heighten tensions and lead to violence. Let’s avoid panic and work together to keep peace,” she cautioned.
Diplomatic Steps Underway
She also assured Nigerians that diplomatic efforts are already in motion. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is engaging with Ghanaian officials to address concerns and ensure the safety and rights of Nigerians in Ghana are respected.
Both the Ghanaian and Nigerian High Commissions have been proactive in responding to the situation, Dabiri-Erewa added, calling on citizens of both nations to refrain from hate speech, violence, or xenophobic behavior.
