We Have Terrorists in Benue” – Aondoakaa Calls for Urgent Action

Chief Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has sounded the alarm over the escalating presence of armed herders in Benue State, describing them as terrorists and calling for decisive intervention, including potential US airstrikes.

Speaking at a New Year consultation dinner that brought together political stakeholders from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue, Aondoakaa stressed the urgent need to tackle the security crisis.

He stated, “Benue State is facing a serious terrorist threat. Airstrikes from the US should have been deployed here before Sokoto. This intervention is long overdue. Those who claim to be here for grazing but are now using arms to attack indigenes, destroy livelihoods, and seize lands are terrorists.”

Aondoakaa highlighted that multiple local government areas in Benue have effectively been overtaken by armed herders, creating a climate of fear and displacement for residents. He expressed frustration over the perceived inaction by the state government and stressed that coordinated measures, including local security forces, are crucial to restoring peace.

The former AGF also outlined his personal commitment to strengthening security in the state should he be elected governor, emphasizing the need for unity among political leaders to address the crisis.

While commending President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address national security challenges, Aondoakaa urged sustained support to prevent further attacks. He specifically condemned the recent massacre in Yelewata community, where over 200 lives were reportedly lost, and stressed that decisive action must be taken to safeguard residents and preserve their prosperity.
