What You Need To Know About Sanusi’s Reinstatement as Emir of Kano

On Thursday, May 23, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Lamido Sanusi, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, as the 14th Emir of Kano. Here are nine essential details about this significant development:

1. Dethronement by Ganduje: Sanusi was dethroned in 2020 by the administration of then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

2. Creation of New Emirates: Following Sanusi’s removal, Ganduje’s administration established four additional emirates in Kano State.

3. Dissolution of Emirate Councils: On Thursday, the Kano Assembly dissolved all five emirate councils, affirming that Governor Abba Yusuf holds the sole constitutional authority to appoint new emirs.

4. Reviving Kano’s Glory: Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu stated that repealing the law creating the additional emirates would restore Kano’s former glory, as the division had diminished the state’s stature at the national level.

5. Abolishment of Councils: The majority leader explained that with the amendment, all five emirate councils were abolished, and the commissioner for local governments would act as overseer.

6. Reinstatement of Sanusi: Governor Abba Yusuf officially reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the 14th Emir of Kano on May 23.

7. Dethroning Current Emirs: Yusuf also removed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and four other first-class emirs from their positions.

8. Eviction Notice: The dismissed monarchs were given 48 hours to hand over their duties to the deputy governor and vacate their palaces.

9. Congratulatory Message: Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara congratulated Muhammad Sanusi II on his reinstatement as the 14th Emir of Kano.
