Why FG Chose KWAM 1 as Aviation Security Ambassador — Keyamo Fires Back at Critics
The Federal Government’s decision to appoint Fuji music legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an Aviation Security Ambassador has sparked a flurry of mixed reactions across social media and public circles.
While some have applauded the move, citing KWAM 1’s influence and reputation, others have questioned the rationale behind selecting a musician for such a role.
But the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), is not taking the criticism lightly. Speaking through an official statement, Keyamo explained that the appointment was not a random gesture, but a strategic decision aimed at strengthening public trust in aviation security campaigns.
“KWAM 1 is a household name with decades of clean public image and an unparalleled connection to grassroots communities across Nigeria,” Keyamo said. “Aviation security is not just about guards and gates; it’s about public awareness, behavioral change, and cultural influence. That’s where he comes in.”
According to Keyamo, the Federal Government is ramping up its safety protocols in line with global aviation standards, and part of the initiative involves public sensitization on security rules, passenger compliance, and safe conduct at airports.
“Appointing someone like KWAM 1,” he added, “means our message will travel faster, especially to segments of the population that formal campaigns might not reach effectively.”
The minister also stressed that celebrity ambassadors are a common practice worldwide in promoting public causes, from health to transport safety. “In the UK, US, and Asia, entertainers and sports icons are regularly used to advance critical public messages. This is no different,” he argued.
Supporters of the move have praised the government for blending entertainment with policy outreach, noting that KWAM 1’s influence cuts across generations and social classes. Critics, however, remain skeptical, insisting that aviation security requires more technical expertise than star power.
Still, KWAM 1 himself has expressed gratitude for the role, promising to use his platform to advocate for safer skies and responsible passenger behavior. “This is a national duty,” he said. “I will give it my all.”
Whether the appointment becomes a game-changer or simply a symbolic move remains to be seen. But for now, one thing is certain — Keyamo is standing firmly by his choice, and KWAM 1 is ready to step into the spotlight, this time not on stage, but in service of the natio
n’s aviation security.
